Introduction Terrorist organizations continue to develop around the world and carry out attacks to instill fear, hurt, and kill thousands of people. Despite anti-terrorism efforts, known terror groups continue to conduct terror attacks globally. Of the known terrorist organizations that are listed by the U.S. Department of State, the one most likely to conduct an attack in the United States would be the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Islamic State (IS) otherwise known as ISIS. Due to the complex capabilities of ISIS ideology, leadership, and distinct global threat; ISIS has become the greatest known threat to the U.S. Homeland. Description of the Organization Prior to August 2014, known splinter cells of the organization have conducted attacks in cities such as Orlando, Florida where an individual conducted a mass shooting at a night club, killing 50 people and injuring just as many then he pledged his allegiance to ISIS. Furthermore, individuals have conducted attacks in San Bernardino, California killing 14 people and injuring more than 20 individuals not necessarily an ISIS-related individual but these attackers were defiantly inspired by the Islamic State. On November 13, 2015, individuals from ISIS claimed horrific attacks that killed over 130 people and injured more than 368 when three suicide bombers detonated themselves during a football game in Paris France, while armed gunmen took hostages in a theater nearby. The totally artificial, stylized sets where â€Å"paintings come to life† is portrayed in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, stripped of all realistic details that become symbolic diagrams of emotional states of Germans in 1920’s – This arouses, dreams alienation, extreme emotional states, mystery, disharmony, destabilization expressing a subjective viewpoint. More than any other national movement in the history of film, German Expressionism was an answer to the dingy reality of daily life. It expressed what people were feeling at the time during the World War I; which was confusion, distress, anger etc. These films being an alternative for filmmakers to show the people what they were feeling, films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari were overtly theatrical and anti-naturalist. The acting styles of the actors were very vague and different from what people would usually see in films. Actors moved in jerky, slow, sinuous patterns with heavy make-up on, again portraying the confusion and anger. The German expressionism films had integration of all elements of mise-en-scene (â€Å"This is a principle used in the creation and study of film. Like in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927), all the buildings in this underground city are colorless and all look the same, even the workers look lifeless. In contrast to this lifeless situation of the lower class working people, the upper class settle in high places where there is life and beauty. The upper class people live in luxury not knowing the misery of the lower class people. The scene where the workers are synchronized. There is a comparison between a higher and lower power therefore Lang has used a lot of over the shoulder and low angle shots. This is visually expressed through mise-en-scene. Everything from the costumes, the structure of the doorway, the lighting, all help create the feeling of oppression and the dehumanization of a man. The posture of the actors and the jerky movements of the actors as they walk, almost as if it is to great an effort, all contributes back to feeling of confusion as the story unfolds. One great example of German Expressionist mise-en-scene in Metropolis is in the scene showing the two clocks. Lang has thought this scene through as he spaces the two clocks perfectly as if to visually portray the two social classes that exist in different areas. The bottom clock counts off the time in ten-hours for the workers, implying that its readers have only basic number skills. The upper clock uses a 24-hour system. The higher-class people: businessmen, lawyers, managers tend to use this clock; it relies on a more sophisticated mathematical concept. The numbers are literally bigger as well as the clock is placed higher in a position of privilege. This depicts the social crisis of capitalism during the 1920’s in Germany. The placement of these two clocks symbolizes the inner workings of metropolis in miniature: an ideal place for the few people on top and a dystopia for the many on the bottom. German silent cinema was arguably far ahead of cinema in Hollywood. â€Å"The direct influence of film makers who moved from Germany to Hollywood developments in style and technique, which were developed through Expressionism in Germany, impressed contemporary filmmakers from elsewhere and were incorporated into their work and so into the body of international cinema from the 1930s onward â€Å" (Kolar). The influence can also be seen throughout the rest of Alfred Hitchcock and Tm Burton’s career. German expressionism also had an influence on contemporary films through which we can say that German Expressionist Films did push German films back onto cinema screens in Europe and America because of their artistic value. The stunning artistry of German Expressionist cinema didn’t escape the eyes of Hollywood studios.

When Pip is in Satis House, hes character is in contrast to Estella and Miss Havisham. His low class is established through the way he looks and talks compared with Miss Havisham and Estella. The difference in their classes can be seen clearly, as Miss Havisham uses words such as obstinate and melancholy to intricate the sentences with big words. This implies that Pip is ashamed of his hands being dirty and his boots being thick because this gives the appearance of him being working class. These are two of the many ways Estella embarrasses Pip and makes Pip feel cynical about himself. The way Estella treated Pip made him feel self-conscious and this lead Pip to change because of his blossoming feelings for Estella. Dickens suggests a small childs perspective by limiting the narrator to what a child  (Pip) would see. Older Pip thinks like a child in the beginning of the novel, recollecting memories. The first-person narrative causes the reader to have more consideration towards Pip, and it enables them to experience what hes feeling since he describes it as it happened to him. Chapter 14 reflects Pips discontentment and his aspirations especially in relation to Estella and Joe. The relationship between Joe and Pip has changes throughout the novel this is because Pip no longer wants to work as a black smith and he doesnt want to get his hands dirty and no longer wants to roll up his shirt-sleeves. This is because Pip feels ashamed of home and how Estella his love looks down at him when he looks deprived and unfortunate. Pip blames Joe for the fact that he has been brought up in a working class way, I wished Joe had been rather more genteelly brought up, and then I should had been so too. It has great value in society and Pip wanted that, he didnt want to be a nobody and do nothing in his life. He wanted to be a great person that some one can look up to or even be a role model. This way he knew that Estella could be his as he would be greatly cherished. At last after education Pip learns that its a most miserable thing to feel ashamed of home. This implies that he regrets being selfish and feels guilty about Joe as Joe loved him like his own child and Pip never appreciated the love. He realised that even though that he had a discontent home life and never enjoyed it much, he still had soft feeling for it underneath. In conclusion, Dickens employs the Bildungsroman technique to great effect in portraying to the reader how Pip changes throughout his life. We know this because it is recollections of Pips story though his own eyes. The protagonist is usually an orphan such as Pip. The education that Pip got was very poor and he has to live in harsh social conditions. During the start of the novel Pip is a very delicate child for instance he cries and he is easily scared. For example in the second chapter he fears by saying I was in mortal terror of the young man who wanted my heart and liver this suggests that Pip was very gullible as a young child. However as time changed he changed as we see a different side of him as he became a different person with money and fame. We follow his desire though love, family, friendship and money. Through out the book we see that Dickens establishes young Pips individuality through language techniques such as imagery and bildungsroman (vulnerability). During the first part of the book Pip was portrayed as an innocent and vulnerable child who gained a lot of sympathy from the reader. Dickens wrote the book Great Expectation in first person this enables the reader to help establish more about Pips character and also a close relationship which graves the readers attention making them more interested. The link to bildungsroman allows the Dickens to successfully show Pips character as the audience sympathise and also support Pip while he is selfish and mocking.
